The Ryder cup
The Ryder cup was born in 1926 at Wentworth Club, Surrey, United Kingdom. The match was originally a team of American Golf Professionals versus a team of Professionals from the British Progessinal Golfers Association.
Before the war the matches were evenly balanced, however after the war the American team reigned supreme. In 1979 it was decided that the British and Irish team would change to Europe, this was mainly because of a spanish wonder called Severiano Ballesteros.
Samuel Ryder
The founding member of the cup was a man called Samuel Ryder he watched the match at Wentworth in 1926 and thought it would be a great idea to make the competition official and donated the magnificent trophy that they play for today, and the competition was born.Samuel was born in Preston, Lancashire, United Kingdom, he was a seed merchant entrepreneur and golf mad!
After watching a match at Wentworth between Britain and the United States he came up with the idea to make the competition perminent. He had made a fortune from his business of selling seed in packets, so he donated a solid gold trophy to the competition and suggested a change in format, and the Ryder Cup was born.
Samuel's biggest regret is that he started playing golf at the age of 50, he was ordered to do so by his doctor tfor health reasons, as soon as he started playing he was hooked.
Samuel hired the services of a golf professional to get him started with golfs fundementals, then changed professionals to an Abe Mitchell who was considered one of the best professioanls at that time, he recieved the majorty of his lessons from his grand home Malborough House. He paid Mitchell £1000 a year salary for his services. He practised everyday except sunday as he was a man of the church and donated large sums of money throughout his life.
Samuels determination in life and business reflected in his golf abilities and within 1 year he held a handicap of 6. He was excepted to the Verulam Golf Club in St. Albans in 1910 and was given the honour of captain in 1911, he captained the club again in 1926 and 1927.
Samuel Ryder organised the first offical Ryder cup in 1927, the match was held in Massachusetts, Samuel agreed to pay each member of the winning team £5.00
A Great Man and we have a lot to thank him for because the game of golf wouldn't ve the same without the Ryder Cup.
